SMART2 Progress - Federal Street

Save some minor landscaping work and sidewalk detailing around Ohio Edison utility access panels, construction on West Federal Street is now finished.

An unloading pull-out for Oh Wow, along Market Street, on the southwest corner of the Central Square, remains to be constructed.

Construction on East Federal Street, between Central Square and Champion Street, is still on hold, due to the ongoing demolition of the damaged Realty Building. Sidewalk, curbing, and pavement remediation work will be needed, due to damage from the gas explosion.

Closing of Industrial Rd.

Complete reconstruction of Industrial Road, between South Meridian Road and Bears Den Road, will begin on August 12, 2024. Industrial Road, between Bears Den Road and South Meridian Road, will be closed, open to local traffic only, effective Monday, August 12, 2024, for approximately four (4) months.

Detour signs will be posted accordingly.

SMART2 Progress - Commerce Street

Now that major demolition work at 20 Federal Place has finished, construction has resumed on West Commerce Street, between the Phelps Street Gateway and Wick Avenue. Work is progressing on the south side of the street, which had been inaccesible during the building demolition work.

With the exception of the Phelps Street Gateway to Wick Avenue block, all of Commerce Street is open to traffic.

Update to MAH-Boardman Walnut PID 116833 - News Release

Update: January 11, 2024
In addition to the project details from the January 4, 2024 News Release, the city of Youngstown also proposes to reconstruct the closed roadway section of Walnut Street between Commerce Street and Wood Street with a Step Street. A Step Street is a thoroughfare fitted with steps for pedestrian traffic rather than paved for motor vehicular traffic. This Step Street will be designed during construction and it is included in the attached plan for location purposes only.
