SMART2 Progress - Park Avenue - Project Completion

Construction work on Park Avenue, between Fifth Avenue and Covington Street, and Fifth Avenue, between Park Avenue and the Westbound Service Road, is complete.

Most construction work, including paving, lining, sidewalk repair work, and installation of new LED streetlights, was finished by early Summer 2022.

New traffic and crosswalk signals at the Park Avenue and Belmont Avenue intersection were installed over Winter 2023, bringing the project to a close.

While the project is a Phase 2 component of SMART2, the work was mostly an upgrade, rather than a total redesign. Road and sidewalk dimensions remained the same, with minor changes to turning lane layouts on the Park Avenue blocks adjacent to St. Elizabeth Hospital. A newly-designated crosswalk was also added on Fifth Avenue, between Stambaugh Auditorium and Wick Park.

The route, a natural connector of St. Elizabeth Hospital, YSU, and Downtown, will be used by the planned SMART2 autonomous shuttle.
