Ohio Edison - Installing Smart Meters in Youngstown

FirstEnergy’s Ohio electric companies will be installing smart meters on customers’ homes and businesses throughout our service area. This effort is part of an ongoing investment approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to modernize our electric distribution system.

This step toward a more modernized electric system will enable automated meter readings and may enhance our ability to respond to outages more efficiently. Customers will also have access to more detailed energy information through our online Home Energy Analyzer tool, which will help them better understand their electricity use and make informed decisions on how to manage their electricity consumption.

We expect to begin installing smart meters on homes and businesses in your community approximately the third week of April and will continue through the Fall. To help ensure customers are aware of this change, they will receive a letter in the mail in advance of their installation date. Our Customer Care Agents will also be available to answer questions about the program and installation schedule. In addition, we will make local law enforcement aware that company representatives will be installing meters throughout the community. Installation of these smart meters may be performed by Ohio Edison employees or contractors (Wellington/ JW Didado) which will have FirstEnergy Contractor badges identifying them with a photo ID.

Be assured that the smart meter technology being implemented has been rigorously tested and demonstrated by manufacturers to be accurate, safe, and secure in systems throughout the country.

I have attached a document that provides a Smart Meter general overview and some basic FAQ that may answer many of your questions.
