Boardman-Walnut Streets Safety Upgrade Progress

Waterline replacement work on East Boardman Street, looking east from Market Street.

Public Works - September 5, 2024

Work on the Boardman-Walnut Streets Safety Upgrade Project is underway, with efforts currently focused on waterline replacement.

Streets involved in this project include East Boardman Street, between Market Street and Walnut Street, and Walnut Street, between East Wood Street and East Front Street.

While not officially a phase of the SMART2 Project, the Boardman-Walnut Streets Project shares many of the same design features, allowing for increased safety and accessiblity for all modes of transportation: motorists, pedestrians, public transit, and bicyclists. Project design features include the following:

  • "Road diet" reduction of lanes from 5 to 2, on Walnut Street, with turn lanes at intersections.
  • Installation of back-in, slant parking on the southbound lane of Walnut Street and parallel parking on the northbound lane.
  • Sidewalk improvements, including landscaped amenity regions and brick inlays.
  • Safety improvement to crosswalks.
  • Addition of a student drop-off zone on East Boardman Street, adjacent to the SMARTS Center.
  • Addition of a WRTA transit stop on South Walnut Street.
  • Landscaped, pedestrian stairway on North Walnut Street, southward from East Wood Street to the bottom of the hill.
  • Energy efficient and aesthetic street lighting.
