Recognizing the immediate potential for expanding their already established construction business, The Gatta Company, LLC purchased the Federal Building with the sole intention of helping to revitalize the City of Youngstown. Situated in the heart of the downtown area, the Federal Building provided The Gatta Company the perfect opportunity to develop what was once one of the city's oldest buildings back into the storied landmark it once was considered. With the assistance of the City of Youngstown's Office of Economic Development, The Gatta Company was able to transform this office building not only into residential apartments capable of providing housing for over 20 people, but also into V2 - a state of the art restaurant and wine bar.

It has been a pleasant surprise working hand-in-hand with the City of Youngstown. For a town perceived so negatively, Gulu Electric has benefited from the many programs the city has offered. Mayor Jay Williams deserves credit for putting his vision in place to assist a town that was on life support and new Mayor Sammarone has vowed to follow through. It has been an exciting economic upturn and it seems to be spreading consistently. A grant made possible through the City of Youngstown has broadened our horizons and allowed this company to expand beyond its parameters.

Description--Apartment style living for students attending Youngstown State University. The apartments provide students with access to campus living with amenities such as their own private bedroom and bath, common living area and kitchen, Rec Room, and exercise facility.
Through the incentives provided by the city of Youngstown and support of the Economic Development Team, my vision and hope for this project became a reality for me as a developer. Without the support of their support, the run down, abandoned and deteriorated Youngstown Electrical Chemical facilities would still stand as an eyesore in the heart of the YSU campus.
Together we worked as a team. With guidance from the Economic Development team, our team was taken through an unfamiliar process and together with their help, we made certain that no stone was left unturned to make this project a reality. This project began in the midst of the financial crisis of 2008, and without all their support and hands on approach, this project could still only be a vision.

OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science & Technology
The City of Youngstown assisted with the renovation and opening of OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology by providing a site development grant equal to 50% of all water and wastewater related expenses in an amount not to exceed $62,000. The incentives offered OH WOW! by the City of Youngstown were of great benefit to us as we relocated to and renovated the historic McCrory building on Central Square, in downton Youngstown. These incentives enabled us to complete our renovation in a timely fashion, and open on May 12, 2011.
We anticipate an economic development impact to the City exceeding $3 million, as a result of the 25,000 to 30,000 people who will visit OH WOW! annually. Community support has been nothing short of tremendous. The most used comment from our visitors has been “OH WOW!” as they visit the center and get involved in our hands-on STEM activities.
Thanks to the efforts of the Office of Economic Development/City of Youngstown, the Children’s Center is already making a positive influence in the downtown area. West Federal Street has seen more families in the past 60 days than in the past 10 years. Our downtown neighbors have welcomed us with open arms and there are many positive changes coming to the downtown area. Several restaurants are scheduled to open in the near future and the overall atmosphere downtown continues to improve. It is obvious when kids show up everyone notices.

The YWCA of Youngstown has recently undergone a complete renovation and historic preservation of the Rayen Avenue building originally built in 1911 as a YWCA. The renovation has transformed the YWCA building into an energy efficient and environmentally friendly structure that will serve the future generation for another century and more. This project was identified as part of the City of Youngstown’s plan for the improvement of the Rayen Avenue Corridor. The transformation includes adaptive reuse, historic preservation, ADA and universal design, green technologies and abatement of environmental issues. The $10 million project converted 36 units of dorm style housing into 30 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments for qualified residents. Residential areas also include on site laundry and activity rooms. Other improvements include space for staff offices, program space and a child care center. Also included are empowerment rooms to be leased to minority or women-owned businesses. The historic lobby and two-story historic gymnasium were converted into community meeting spaces with caterer’s kitchens. The exterior brick has been cleaned and re pointed, and new windows improve the appearance and energy efficiency of the majestic 5 story building. New systems for heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical assure the safety and security of the site as well as improve energy efficiency. This building is at the heart of all the programs and services offered, and the updated building will allow the YWCA to continue delivering critical services to women and their families in an efficient and effective manner. Funding for the project includes, Low Income Tax Credits, Federal and State Historic Tax Credits, Federal Home Loan Bank Funds, Housing Assistance Funds, Clean Ohio Grant, Green Communities Grant, Home Funds and private funds from businesses, foundations and individuals.
The partnership with the city was instrumental to the development and execution of this project. The YWCA appreciates the partnership and assistance of the City of Youngstown in securing the Home Funds and a Clean Ohio Grant. Reduction of permit fees for the project was also very important to maximize available funds for use of the project. Without the assistance of the city, the YWCA would not have been as successful in meeting the goals of the project. The YWCA offers a sincere thank you to the Office of Economic Development/City of Youngstown for assisting in this project.
